Reader's Blog: Tackle the scourge of drugs in our community

The use of crack cocaine and other illicit drugs has increased tenfold in our community.

The number of users walking the streets like skeletons is a minute-by-minute event for us all to see. We, as a GAA club in Ballymun, are at the frontline daily dealing with this cancer, while also trying to educate the coming generation through drug awareness programmes.

We see young people being groomed as dealers due to Government’s failure to deal with youth unemployment while cutting resources in other areas.

While the announcement of the completion of the Regeneration of Ballymun might make a nice soundbite, we know the task of regenerating will never be complete.

Drugs are once again being allowed to be sold in Ballymun to keep it out of the city and other affluent areas. Ballymun will not stand for this. We want a quick response, not political speeches or manoeuvres. We ask Minister of State for Training and Skills John Halligan to put a plan in place for the young people of our community.

We want to know what extra resources will put in place as a rapid response to this emergency?
