Waste policy is no longer a load of rubbish

I CAN’T let this Environmental Awareness Week pass without complimenting Cork County Council on their state-of-the-art waste and recycling centre in Clonakilty.

Waste policy is no longer a load of rubbish

Things have certainly changed in the 10 years since my husband and I took up residence near the town.

After living in Germany for over 20 years we were ‘conditioned’ to separate our rubbish. I just couldn’t bring myself to discard newspapers. In March 1999 we were delighted with the announcement of ‘20/20 vision’ of waste management.

The notice informed us that our waste paper could be handed in at the Kinsale Road landfill. Unfortunately, the gentleman in charge knew nothing about 20/20 vision!

It has taken a long time, but the service now available is second to none. Not only can I bring my paper but also glass, plastic bottles, cans, food tins, batteries, etc.

The friendly staff there are always on hand to help if needs be. As someone who was a thorn in the side of the local authority with regard to recycling for a long time, I believe it’s only fair now that I should say well done.
