Protect all the remaining buildings of 1916 Rising

Those campaigning for the preservation of the last extant 1916 battlefield are relieved that the State has at last acted to preserve nos 14 - 17 Moore Street.

Chartered Land and their agents were unreliable guardians of such an important monument, in an area declared by the National Museum as “the most important historic site in modern Irish history”.

The announcement is welcome and there is now the opportunity to develop this area in keeping with its historic significance — it is the location of the last stand of the volunteers of 1916 and the last HQ of the provisional government.

All 1916 buildings in this area must be accorded the same protection and a new proposal drawn up to protect the terrace and adjoining lanes of history. More importantly, the Chartered Land planning application to destroy the area must now be declared dated and redundant.

The recommendations of the City Council Moore Street Advisory Committee can now be implemented in full, so that the area is made presentable in time for the fast-approaching 1916 centenary celebrations.
