A man in his forties has died in a house fire in east Cork.

GARDAÍ in Youghal, Co Cork, arrested two young men yesterday in connection with a vicious assault, the burning of a hearse and the vandalism of a number of paintings.

DUE to all the negative reports of Youghal that have appeared in and on the local media recently I feel compelled to share the positive side with your readers.

TRALEE came to a standstill yesterday for the funeral of photographer, television cameraman, photo-journalist and founder of Kerry’s Eye newspaper, Padraig Kennelly.

PÁDRAIG KENNELLY, the photographer, television cameraman and founder of the Kerry’s Eye newspaper, has died at his home in Tralee at the age of 82.

GARDAÍ said a mechanic repairing a truck was very fortunate not to have been killed when it rolled down a hill, dragging him along.

IN a tribute to Robert Boyle (March 6), you state that Ireland has produced a Nobel prizewinner for chemistry. I cannot find any evidence of this.

IN his letter headlined ‘Church will survive despite the media’ (January 4), Eamon Reilly reminded me of an incident that is said to have occurred as Napoleon marched on Rome.

ONE of the biggest Garda operations in Tralee, Co Kerry, was mounted as up to 30 settled Travellers appeared at special court sittings arising from an ongoing feud between Traveller families in the area.

YOUR editorial (‘Ireland can’t dodge the big issues forever’, August 5) shattered my hopes.

APART from the pictures of hands with rosary beads accompanying a few of your reports, I have found myself generally agreeing with your coverage of the abuse revelations concerning the diocese of Cloyne, of which I am a fairly committed member. Like many ordinary Catholics I have been very upset by the revelations.

IN support of their case for destructive research on human embryos, Dr Tom Moore and Prof Tom Cotter make use of what they call ethical pragmatism.

IN HIS letter (November 17), Con Hayes presents a well-argued case for permitting the killing of human beings at various stages of development. However, in my opinion there are several flaws in his argument:

THE Courts Service yesterday confirmed it was pressing ahead with plans to build a new courthouse on the outskirts of Tralee, despite local opposition.

MICHAEL FUREY (Letters, February 25) seems to assume that anyone who disagrees with atheism does not “think with their heads”.

I WOULD like to offer a solution to the disagreement between Sean Fitzgerald (Letters, November 5) and Con Hayes (Letters, November 26) regarding the conflict or otherwise between faith and evolution.

IN your editorial supporting same-sex marriage (November 3), you argue that everyone is entitled to have their human rights recognised and respected, and you seem to believe everyone should have the right to marry, even when that marriage is with someone of the same sex.

THE letter from Fr Con McGillicuddy (September 17) really brought the Richard Dawkins’ disciples out in force with all guns blazing across your letters’ columns over the following weeks.

ONE of the saddest sentences I have ever read appeared in your issue of September 26.

I SUPPOSE we can all understand where John McSweeney is coming from in his letter headlined ‘Conservative Catholics need to think again’ (Irish Examiner, May 17).
