Replay of final after ‘extra man’ fiasco

WEST Limerick GAA chiefs last night ordered their divisional junior hurling final to be replayed after Sunday afternoon’s decider in Feenagh between St Kieran’s and Askeaton ended in a blaze of controversy when a St Kieran’s substitute entered the action with none of his teammates making way and struck the match-winning goal to hand his side a 2-12 to 2-11 victory.

St Kieran’s had been reduced to 14 men when one of their players was sent-off during the second-half but at the time of the match-winning goal, they had 15 men on the field with both the substitute and the player who was supposed to make way, involved in the action.

Despite strong protests by Askeaton players and management, referee Jason O’Mahony allowed the goal to stand after consultation with his linesmen and umpires.
