Man, 30s, dies in Wheatfield Prison following serious incident

A man in his 30s has died in Wheatfield Prison in Dublin following a serious incident on Thursday.

It is understood the man, aged 30, was from South Dublin and was sharing a cell with another person.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the inmate.

An autopsy will be carried out, with the coroner expected to determine the cause of death.

Death in custody

In a statement on Friday morning, the Irish Prison Service said it could confirm a “death in custody” at the prison.

"All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant," a spokesperson said. 

"The cause of death is determined by the coroner’s Office. 

"The Irish Prison Service wishes to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends. Next of kin have been informed," they added.

A family liaison officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased, and the services of Gardaí from the Technical Bureau have been requested.

Gardaí have said they are awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine the direction of the investigation.
