Cork GAA previews: Barrs on the back foot as Douglas scent blood

McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC Group 1: Douglas v St Finbarr’s, Páirc Uí Rinn

The defeat to Carrigaline three weeks ago was just the second group-stage defeat incurred by St Finbarr’s since the competition changed format in 2020. Losing to Mallow in 2024 was a setback they recovered from to still top their group but this loss has them on the back foot, not least because they face a Douglas side on a high after themselves overcoming Mallow.

McCarthy Insurance Group Premier IFC Group 2: Aghada v Macroom, Ovens

A point against Castletownbere first time out was valuable for Macroom in trying to avoid having to win the relegation play-off for the fourth year in a row, albeit offset by the fact that Aghada and Kiskeam also drew to leave table as level as it was before the ball was thrown in. Eolan O’Leary, Oisín O’Sullivan and Pa Lucey had helped to put the mid-Cork side in a good position and they will look to draw on the positives from that while Cian Hegarty and Joe McKenna each scored 1-2 for Aghada in their clash against the Duhallow outfit.

Group 3: Fermoy v Nemo Rangers, Glenville

Across the second to fifth tiers, Fermoy were the only relegated side to win their opening match, though they needed seven unanswered points to pip Naomh Abán by one. Ben Twomey accounted for half of their 0-20 total and his long-range shooting ability is sure to be an asset here while David Lardner is also capable of taking on his share of the scoring burden and the evergreen Tomás Clancy remains a key figure. Nemo’s second team lost by two points to promoted Ballinora, a game where Donagh O’Leary and Dara O’Sullivan were the scorers-in-chief while Alan Cronin, Jack Horgan and Conor O’Donovan provided experience.
