Passengers light up in enclosed rail stations

SO Barry Kenny of Iarnród Éireann asserts that my claim (Irish Examiner letters, April 5) that the company is not implementing the smoking ban is "wild" (Irish Examiner letters, April 11). The only wild claim is his own.

Passengers light up in enclosed rail stations

I still see passengers smoking in the presence of rail staff in enclosed stations.

Mr Kenny ignored the detailed points in my letter and attempted to brush them off with a general statement.

Notices and announcements are futile in the absence of action, particularly when those who complain are passed from pillar to post, safe in the knowledge that they will either give up or the offender will have stopped by the time a rail employee acts. This hardly counts as compliance.

Provide a freephone hotline to report such incidents and maybe the public will then believe the company is in earnest.
