Gay community treated with contempt

HOMOPHOBIA in Ireland? Regretfully, we have a long, long way to go, as indicated by Niall Murray's article (Irish Examiner, February 20).

Gay community treated with contempt

We Irish have a unique history of psychological alienation and segregation, of racial prejudice and discrimination that dates back hundreds of years, and it's unconscionable that we still treat a certain section of our society our gay community with the same form of contempt.

It is not the Catholic Church's political influence alone that is responsible for the situation but they do have a lot to answer for. The Pope and his clergy find themselves in the perverse and contradictory position that on one hand they are on a promotional campaign for the church, all the while ruling it with an 18th-century whip, outlawing gay relationships as immoral to their billion-plus members.
