Government takes the daredevil option

FOR more than 20 years successive governments have neglected environmental issues. They invited pharmaceutical and chemical companies to set up business in Ireland without any obligation to find new production methods in order to avoid toxic waste.

Government takes the daredevil option

They have not monitored people's health in the vicinity of these firms in spite of a huge number of asthmatic children. They have not come up with a new approach to tackle the domestic waste problem. Burning toxic and household waste in the Cork harbour region is the daredevil option of an irresponsible government.

An Bord Pleanála's decision to grant permission to install a toxic-cum-domestic waste incinerator in Ringaskiddy shows only that it is not an independent board. Ignoring the senior inspector's wise recommendation not to grant permission is a crime against humanity and the environment.

The Government and An Bord Pleanála didn't even think in economic terms because the side effects on tourism, gastronomy and the export of meat and dairy products would be disastrous if the incinerator were to be built. Will the Government set up a fund compensation for tourism magnets in east Cork for loss of revenue? The German market for Kerrygold butter will be lost if the incinerator is built. But it won't be built.

People in Cork have a unique chance to show the world how local democracy can change government policy. It's a good time to continue the opposition campaign because the start of the EU presidency will throw light on the Government's actions.

I'm a German living in Cork. I've only been here for six months, but my impression is that there's so much potential for a better society in the future because the Irish are a people who care.

I've never met so much kindness before but caring for the environment is something that many Irish still have to learn.

The residents of the Cork harbour region and the other groups opposing the incinerator have already proved there's a community spirit, a willingness to put hard work into the struggle to keep Ireland green.

May the Rebel Cork spirit thrive!
