Phone company urged to text bad news first

MY last monthly statement from mobile phone operator 02 showed a price increase of more than double for text messages sent internationally.

Phone company urged to text bad news first

A simple text message forwarded internationally now costs 25 cents compared to 11 cents previously.

I phoned the 02 customer service to complain that I was not informed about the price increase beforehand. They said they had fulfilled all their obligations under ComReg (Commission for Communications Regulation) by advertising in the newspapers.

I can understand the reluctance on the part of the 02 operator not wanting to inform all of their network users of such a huge increase. But I am annoyed that ComReg did not insist that all 02 customers should be informed prior to any price increase.

This could easily have being accomplished in two ways. Firstly by sending a text message to all users and, secondly, by putting a notification of the price increase in the previous month’s bill.

After all, 02 has no problem using these two methods when there is some promotion to be made. So, please Comreg regulator, wake up and get it right next time.
