Heimir Hallgrímsson admits the stress of this camp ultimately cost his Ireland team energy as they squandered a two-goal lead against Austria.
His Ireland team were a vote away from boycotting last Sunday’s win over Israel and will meet the same nation on Sunday in an occasion that’s developing into a grudge match.
Troy Parrott’s first-half brace was cancelled by two goals from the top seeds in the group that denied Ireland top place by the midway mark of the campaign.
Ireland are 10 games unbeaten at home but the way they couldn’t see out the result will sting.
The manager said: “We’re happy with the first half performance. Seeing the Aviva crowd gave everyone a boost. We didn’t know what to expect so we really appreciate their support.
“Austria are a physical, high-pressing opponent which we knew would cost us energy, We knew there’d be substitutions He added: “I felt we were losing control and organisation before they scored. You gain fresh feet but lose organisation from many new players coming together. We planned them before but we’re losing energy because of everything going on. We’re not happy with the two goals conceded.
“It’s just fatigue in the team. We only have a point but we must be happy with the players at the end trying to get that winning goal.
“We will be watching that goal from Troy for years to come. It was just a shame that the goal didn’t result in a win.”
