Students need an upgraded swim pool

THE parent’s council of Maria Immaculata Community College, Dunmanway, at a recent meeting, called on all public representatives in west Cork to lobby Cork county council and any other relevant bodies to expedite the renovation and upgrading of facilities at Dunmanway swimming pool.

Students need an upgraded swim pool

The pool is adjacent to the community college and should be a tremendous asset to the students there. So it was disappointing to find, in a recent survey, that fewer than 10% of pupils use the pool regularly.

Over 80% of the students expressed an interest in having swimming as part of their physical education classes and 40% expressed an interest in doing lifesaving classes.

From the results of this survey, it is evident there would be significantly greater usage of the pool by the students if the facilities were upgraded.

The principal of the college, Pat McKelvey, strongly favours the inclusion of swimming in the school curriculum.

In the interest of promoting greater fitness among our teenagers and young people, we strongly urge the county council to facilitate him in achieving this worthy objective.
