The war of lies
WE have heard the belated and begrudging acceptance from the US and British governments that:
(a) Iraq did not have large quantities of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
(b) The whole purpose of the war had nothing to do with disarmament.
(c) Saddam did not have the capacity to activate biological and chemical weapons in just 45 minutes.
(d) The intelligence was far from clear, and indeed misleading in critical areas.
(e) Saddamâs WMD programme wasnât âactive, detailed and growing,â as claimed by Mr Blair.
The world now knows that the stated reasons for going to war were lies.
Addressing the French public in 1767, Voltaire wrote: âAnyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices.â
It is time we denied them that power.
