Abusive fans undermine GAA’s core values
I was dismayed by the abusive language that the Waterford players had to endure from their own supporters.
Rather than encouragement, many of the 'fans' consistently criticised the team in a way that must have had devastating effects on the confidence of the players unfortunate enough to hear it.
For months, these players have trained exceptionally hard in preparation for the championship and the least they deserve is the respect and admiration of their fellow county men for their considerable effort.
Unfortunately, such behaviour is commonplace at GAA games and, in my opinion, is completely unacceptable.
The tolerance afforded to such terrace slander reflects a failure on the part of the GAA to protect its players.
The English Premiership advocates a 'kick racism out of football' policy and perhaps a similar campaign should be undertaken by the GAA to prevent this kind of behaviour.
If something is not done, then the values of the GAA such as sportsmanship and dignity among players the values upon which the organisation was founded may be in serious danger.
