Street makeover a threat to well-heeled

I LIKE the new appearance of Patrick Street in Cork

Street makeover a threat to well-heeled

The alterations have made it a pleasant place to stroll and weary shoppers will undoubtedly welcome the addition of new taxi ranks.

Recently, however, while walking towards the southern end the heel of my shoe got caught in the large cracks between the paving stones and the shoe was pulled off my foot, tearing open the strap in the process.

This isn't the first time my footwear was caught on the new pavement: it happened also with a pair of boots.

After rather embarrassingly replacing my shoe I examined the rest of the street as I walked on, and noticed that large amounts of the spacing between the paving stones was not grouted or was unsuitably filled in.

This problem also exists on Carey's Lane where redbrick stones have been laid.

I cannot be the only woman in Cork city who is experiencing this problem, and I feel that it is only a matter of time before an injury occurs. However, in future, I will be wearing flat shoes down the streets of my native city.
