Why we need a new abortion referendum
Having acknowledged that he pro-life group would win a referendum by 47% to 36%, you still called on the Government to legislate for abortion in line with the ‘X’ case.
So much for the voice of the people. It is no surprise that more of those aged over 35 are pro-life as they have children and recognise the miracle and dependence of the infant, born and unborn.
It is correct to say that the 2002 referendum failed to overturn the ‘X’ case judgement not because the majority of the Irish people wanted that case legislated for, but rather because some pro-life voters were dissatisfied with the proposal.
The Supreme Court decision in the ‘X’ case was not in the spirit of the 1983 referendum, which it set out to interpret.
It is a very disappointing response to any suicidal mother to offer her abortion as a solution. The HSE have let us down by following such a path. Professional psychiatric treatment is the solution to suicide, not abortion. Abortion is associated more with causing psychiatric illness than curing it.
Ireland can boast the lowest maternal death rate in the world as our doctors have the highest standards. They should be protected under legislation to allow them carry on their good work - but not ‘X’ case legislation. A referendum is required to guarantee equal rights of mother and child.
