Softening the cough of a smoking objector
One presumes the ever vigilant Mr Duffy would consider Heuston station, the nation’s largest, to be enclosed - with a ceiling over 120 feet above, a giant gorge open at one end that allows a stiff east wind and ten rail tracks through, and an open space to accommodate double-decker buses at the other.
One wonders if, in his vigilance, he ever considers his fellow smoking passengers who, in deference to him, must refrain from smoking for a train journey that can take up to three hours.
If you do not smoke, Ewan, that is a long time to wait. Because of the absurd ban, Mr Duffy’s fellow passenger cannot smoke in the taxi and, on reaching his destination, will not be permitted to smoke there either.
But Mr Duffy wants Iarnród Éireann to persecute this smoker regardless.
I salute the reasonable Iarnród Éireann employees who are neither paid nor empowered to hassle passengers in the huge, open cavern that is the train station.
