Motorway signs only lead to trouble ahead

I WAS heading southbound on the M50 one night recently when I almost missed my turn-off as the main signpost for it wasn’t visible because of overgrown trees.

Motorway signs only lead to trouble ahead

In fact almost all of the signposts on the left-hand side of the road on the southern part of the M50 are partially blocked by vegetation. This is a driving hazard in itself.

What is much more sinister - and I have written to the NRA about this, with no response - is the fact that the sign indicating the exit is actually on the exit, and sometimes on the slip road itself.

So, unless you have spectacular levels of vision there is no way you can see these signs until you are about 40m from the turn-off when it is too late to take alternative action without endangering yourself and other road users.

I don’t know how many times I have been on motorways in this country and seen drivers reversing because they could not see the signpost for their exit before it was too late.

Contrast this with my visit to Britain a few weeks ago when I drove from Holyhead to Blackpool. The motorway signs are superb. There is ample notice of exits about a mile in advance and frequent reminders, so it is very difficult to go wrong.

The signposts there are not concealed by vegetation and there are no abandoned cars to cause further hazards.

Perhaps it may be worthwhile for the NRA to take a trip across the water to see how it should be done rather than repeating the same mistakes time and again while endangering lives in the process.
