Mikel Arteta says he and Arsenal are ‘comfortable’ about ‘resolving’ a new deal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is ‘comfortable’ about agreeing a new contract at the club when time allows (Gareth Fuller/PA).

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has promised fans they have nothing to worry about regarding his contract situation and insisted everyone at the club is “comfortable” about extending his deal soon.

After Arteta ended the Gunners’ 22-year wait for Premier League title success in May, new terms were expected to be finalised between the Spaniard and the club quickly after the conclusion of last season.

However, with Arsenal set to begin their 2026-27 campaign with the Community Shield against Manchester City in Cardiff on Sunday, there have been minimal updates on the long-term future of Arteta, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract.

Yet, Arteta said: “They (Arsenal fans) don’t have to worry about any of that, because I want to be here.

“I am extremely happy. I feel very grateful to work with the people that I work with and when we have the possibility, we will resolve that. And that’s it.

“There is always another priority, I think! That’s the way we have been treating it, I think because everybody feels comfortable that the time on the contract is not going to be an issue.

“I think because my will, certainly, is to be here and I am very happy here. My feeling from the club is the same one. That is why everyone is doing things in a really organic way.”

Premier League champions Arsenal have boosted their ranks with the addition of former Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaeres and Christos Tzolis has joined from Club Brugge, but pursuits of Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior have been unsuccessful during a summer transfer window where Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea have all spent £100million on one player.

Arteta added: “I am really happy with the squad, the players that I have and I am really happy with the ambition of the club.

“There is zero question about that and we have shown that in the manner we have tried to act, but I think we need to do it our own way.

“We have super strengths and we have other areas we need to be very conscious because we don’t have the elements or the structure that other clubs have.

“We need to do it our way. We are always on it that way and we will do what we believe is the right thing to do. To have the best possibility to compete in every competition that’s for sure.”

Arteta had to battle with numerous injury problems last season with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka managed due to ongoing issues.

A medical review has led to an overhaul of the department with head of sports medicine Dr Zafar Iqbal and head of sports science and performance Tom Allen moved on.

“First of all thank you to them for all the incredible work they have done for the club, for the players, for myself and how well they have taken us and we will look to improve and evolve in certain areas,” Arteta explained.

“We need to look across the club and we have made certain decisions that in our opinion will help us in the medium and long term to be better.

“They are always difficult when you talk about people and you get such a strong relationship. It is always very very tough.”
