McDaid deserves some credit for his honesty

FROM a political point of view, Jim McDaid is guilty of only one thing: outspokenness and honesty, which are virtues not often found among Irish politicians.

McDaid deserves some credit for his honesty

As Minster for Sport and Tourism, his finest hour was closing the deal on the 2005 Ryder Cup for Ireland.

Sure, his comments on suicide two years ago left a lot to be desired. While there was a certain credibility in his statement, it was his insensitive phraseology not so much the content of what he had to say that landed him in hot water.

His political record shows a lot of positive enthusiasm with regard to the proposed national stadium and his policies on sport and young people. He also showed a constructive approach to the general problem of road safety.

Jim McDaid has broken the law and will suffer the consequences. But a clear distinction must be made between his personal problems and the excellence of his work.

It is obvious he is being made a scapegoat in the form of cheap point-scoring by opposition parties, media and the anti-Fianna Fáil electorate.
