Tony Spollen did his job in Allied Irish bank without fear or favour, exposing fraudulent practice irrespective of the consequences for himself, writes Michael Clifford.

Tony Spollen, who died last Sunday, did the State some service. Mr Spollen always claimed he was not a whistleblower, that it was not he who leaked to the media an internal AIB report dating from 1991 which blew the roof on widespread fraud in the banking sector.
