Apples and oranges are equal but not the same

Civil marriages and the sacrament of marriage are as apples and oranges.

Apples and oranges are equal but not the same

They are both unique and equal unions, just as apples and oranges are unique and equal fruit.

They are (already) equal but different.

What is being sought, using the terminology of equality, is a fusion of civil marriage and civil partnership: to make them identical (were that possible) by using the terminology of equality.

But to declare by vote or legislation that apples are identical to oranges, or oranges identical to apples, would be a falsity.

Such a development may even be open to constitutional challenge.
