Airport must take step forward and get escalator
I refer to the necessity to struggle up almost 30 steps after arriving on a flight at Cork Airport. This requirement is daunting for anybody beyond middle age. In my case the effects of chronic rheumatism, plus many other legacy sport injuries, make the steps an endurance ordeal and raise the inevitable question — “Is it worth it?” I pity old folks that are obliged to make the climb on a frequent basis.
The news that Queen Elizabeth will use Cork Airport during her State visit next month presents a possible solution.
The queen likes to do walkabout but I doubt if, at the age of 85, she will risk this particular challenge.
Therefore, I suggest that some of the great expense that goes into the organisation of such a visit be diverted toward the acquisition of an escalator at the airport.
A simple little one as used at every other shop downtown would suffice. It would avoid a possible embarrassment during the royal visit. The benefits would flow for years to come.
If the provision of the facility could be expedited perhaps she might condescend to perform the official opening of the new escalator and it could be named after her. I hope my suggestion can be acted upon.
The steps are a deterrent to visitors and action is urgently needed.
