Alex McCarthy, 16, from Carlow, was killed on Sunday morning when the BMW in which he was travelling was driven the wrong way down the motorway and crashed into another car.

Alex was “deeply loved by his heartbroken mother Lucelle and father Edward,” the notice on RIP.ie said.

The teenager was the “adored brother of Jordan, Edward, Donna and Nakita” and the “cherished grandson of Tina Roycroft and William and Mary McCarthy,” it said.

“Alex will be sadly missed by parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, loving and heartbroken girlfriend Georgia, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives and friends.” Funeral arrangements have yet to be published.

The online condolences section has been disabled on the RIP.ie notice.

However, options are available to express sympathy by sending a paid-for sympathy card, donating to charity or sending flowers.

Second death notice published

It is the second of the five teenagers’ death notices to be posted online.

On Monday, the funeral notice for 15-year-old Joe Carthy from Athy in Co Kildare was posted on RIP.ie, but it was removed hours later following a large volume of messages online.

Joe and Alex were killed on Sunday morning alongside Jack Kennedy, 17, from Athy, Co Kildare; Jeremy O’Brien, 18, from Carlow; and Kamil Pustkowski, 17, from Limerick, when the BMW in which they were travelling was driven the wrong way down the M9 motorway and collided head-on with another vehicle.

Their vehicle smashed into a car carrying three sisters and a seven-year-old boy, who were driving to an early morning flight to attend a family wedding in the UK.

A fundraiser has been launched to support the three sisters, Alma Kinsella, Niamh Kinsella and Ella Hendricken, and the child who were seriously injured in the crash.

It is understood Alma and Niamh were sitting in the front of the car at the time of the incident, while their younger sister Ella and the little boy were in the back.

Although two of the sisters who were hospitalised after their car was hit were initially in a critical condition, their condition is understood to have stabilised, although they remain in serious condition in hospital.

All four remain in hospital undergoing treatment for serious injuries. The little boy is believed to have suffered leg injuries.
