An Post chief executive David McRedmond has been appointed to lead the Government's new Dublin taskforce aimed at rejuvenating the city centre.
Cabinet has approved the taskforce, which will focus on curbing antisocial behaviour and improving safety and public transport, but will also look at arts, culture, and business within the "inner cordon" of the capital.
It is understood that Mr McRedmond, who was previously in the running to take over as RTÉ director general in 2023, will be announced as chair of the taskforce by Taoiseach Simon Harris at the official launch on Thursday.
Mr McRedmond also held the position of chief executive in TV3 and before that was the commercial director of Eircom and the managing director of Eircom Enterprises.
In his early career, he was a retail industry executive in the UK and US, where he held senior roles such as operations director of Waterstones, and chief executive of WH Smith.
Mr Harris has made the taskforce a priority since his election, announcing at the Fine Gael ard fheis in April that he would be working to immediately convene the body.
The aim of the taskforce is to bring forward concrete recommendations to improve the public realm, safety, and experience in the city centre and make it a "more thriving, attractive and safe cityscape" as well as improving its desirability as a location to live, work, do business and visit.
It will look at the use of cultural spaces, the public transport network, and issues around antisocial behaviour and litter, and will be led by an independent chair and will include representatives from An Garda Síochána, Dublin City Council, and the National Transport Authority, among others.
The taskforce will deliver its recommendations to the Taoiseach and the Government for consideration within 12 weeks.
