Severe weather warning issued

Met Éireann has issued a severe weather warning for at least the next 24 hours as heavy rain and strong winds batter the country.

The east and south of the country are the worst effected with winds reaching up to 100kph and heavy downpours causing flooding.

Motorists are being advised to drive with extreme care as spot flooding - as well as fallen debris - has been reported in parts.

In Co Monaghan, the N54 is impassable through Clones because of flooding, while in Kerry the Slea Head Road is closed at Cumeenole Beach and is not expected to reopen until midday.

In Dublin, emergency services were this morning dealing with a fallen tree on the Lower Glenageary Road, with the AA advising motorists to approach the area with care.

Emergency services were also at the scene of a three-vehicle collision on the northbound side of the M7, about 1km before the Naas South junction.

Further rain is forecast today, although winds are expected to moderate in the afternoon.
