Extradition of Lithuanian national sought
A Lithuanian is alleged to have broken into a house in his home country in 2001 and to have stabbed a woman in the hand, the High Court heard today.
An application for the extradition of Irmantas Kavaliauskas, with an address at Cluainn Alainn, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim, was adjourned until January 12 by Mr Justice Patrick Mc Carthy.
Garda Catherine Walsh, Carrick-on-Shannon garda station, Co Leitrim, told the court she had arrested Kavaliauskas at Carrigallen today on foot of a European Arrest Warrant that had been endorsed by the High Court in September last year.
She said 33-year-old Kavaliauskas, from Turcinai Village, Sokiai District, Lithuania, had told her he had left Lithuania 10 years ago and had been in Ireland for the past four years.
The arrest warrant seeks his return to Lithuania on the grounds he is wanted by the authorities there who wish to charge him in connection with a house break-in, robbery and alleged assault.
Barrister Kenny Kerins told the court Mr Kavaliauskas was reserving his position on all matters including identification.
Judge Mc Carthy directed that he be detained in custody with consent to bail on terms including payment of a cash surety, surrender of travel documents and signing on at Carrick-on-Shannon garda station.
