Victims of the Troubles to get Christmas gift

More than 5,000 troubles victims and their families will receive extra money during the Christmas period, it was announced today.

First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said £1.8m (€2m) would be available.

Carers of the injured will receive a payment of £500 (€562.85) towards the cost of a respite break and more than 1,000 families will receive a payment of £250 (€281.28). Almost 1,700 elderly will receive £200 (€225) to help with winter heating costs.

Deputy first minister Martin McGuinness said: “This funding will help many of the most vulnerable individuals in our society and their families in a practical way.

“This demonstrates our commitment to making life better for victims and survivors.”

The Northern Ireland Memorial Fund will help distribute the money.

First Minister Peter Robinson said: “We are aware of how difficult the Christmas period can be for many of those who suffered most as a result of our recent conflict, particularly those who lost a loved one.

“We are therefore very pleased to be able to provide this substantial support through the Northern Ireland Memorial Fund.

“It will help ease the burden for many families at this particularly difficult and emotional time.”
