Gun used in Cork shooting is found

The shotgun used by a gunman who injured a youth in Cork yesterday afternoon has been recovered.

The gun was found yesterday evening in Watergrasshill, just after the Ford Mondeo car used by the gunman was discovered.

The 14-year-old youth who was hit by shotgun pellets in the incident at Farren Street in Blackpool has been released from hospital.

He was injured in the back and side when the gunman shot two indiscriminate shots, at 2pm yesterday.

A senior garda source today told The Evening Echo: “We are worried in case there is some sort of a kickback or reprisal from yesterday’s attack.”

The moments of criminal madness took place when the black Ford Mondeo slowed down at the entrance to the cul de sac.

The masked gunman fired two shots in the direction of a house at the top of the cul de sac.

The car was found abandoned on the outskirts of Watergrasshill at 4.40pm. In a subsequent search of the area, the gun was found.

A garda source has appealed for anyone who saw the 97 C-registered car being driven aggressively between Cork and Watergrasshill to contact them.

Door to door enquiries were continuing in the Farren Street area today.

Sources believe the gunman was too far away for the attack to be an attempt on the life of one of the three youths. But it is believed the gunman singled out the group as targets.

The injured youth is connected to a Cork family who are known to gardaí and who have become involved in a row with members of a Clare-based gang who moved to Cork in the past year.

The incident is one of a number involving the Cork-based group in recent weeks.

Gardaí in Gurranabraher are also investigating an allegation that shots were fired at a house in Sun Valley Drive in Knocknaheeny within the past week.

One angle being pursued is that it may have been done by the Clare gang.
