Train drivers based in Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Galway and Dublin Heuston are still refusing to work after Irish Rail introduced new city-link trains today.

The unofficial action is causing major disruption to all services and commuters are being asked not to travel by train unless absolutely necessary.

The Taoiseach says today's unofficial action by some train drivers which is causing widespread disruption to services between Dublin and the south and south west is unwarranted.

The row involves the introduction of new city link trains with the drivers complaining of inadequate training.

Bertie Ahern said the action by the drivers is mistimed.

“The action is unofficial,” he said. “I understand that the company is in contact with Union leadership and in any event, there were meetings scheduled between the company and the unions tomorrow so really this was totally unwarranted.”
