BRITISH Prime Minister Gordon Brown came to Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s aid yesterday, saying Ireland should be allowed “a short period of reflection” following the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty.

Mr Cowen has been under pressure since Friday’s referendum result to arrive at a solution to the crisis caused by Ireland saying no.

Some member states suggested the Government should hold a second referendum, while others called for the treaty to be implemented as planned — a move which would leave Ireland in limbo.
