DURING the course of several social study conferences in the late 1980s I came to know and admire Eoin 0’Loinsigh of Siochán, Castlegregory, Co Kerry, who, in his 90s by then, was a life-long scholar and a great advocate of the Irish language.

EWAN DUFFY (Irish Examiner letters, November 10), who was horrified to see actual smokers having a cigarette in Dublin recently, is merely showing the intolerance of his own phobia.

MICHEÁL MARTIN has received wide acclaim for his crusade against more than one million smokers. But the smoking ban must be only the opening salvo in the war on all carcinogens.

WHILE I welcome the recent reported fall in cigarette consumption in Ireland, I still maintain that smokers only harm themselves.

I READ with interest the increasing number of letters to Irish newspapers from Americans, usually representing some anti-smoking forum and applauding our absolute ban in Ireland.
