Residents alone not to blame for litter
In your editorial on August 29 you state that this should now provide an incentive for the people of the area to clean up their act because they are disgracing the proud people of Cork.
I would like to point out that the fault does not lie alone with the people... the local authorities are responsible for the “air of neglect” which has gained us this dubious distinction.
I walked the main areas of Mayfield the other night and, yes, there was litter, but not one bin has been provided in the whole area. Surely local authorities and businesses have a responsibility to provide them if we are to keep the area litter-free.
The tenants of Mayfield Shopping Centre pay high rents for their premises, yet it has been neglected over the years and is badly in need of an upgrade.
It is unfair to include Mayfield in a list of towns when it is a suburb of a city and does not have its own town council like Fermoy or Cobh.
I hope this criticism of the area will inspire local people to become politically aware and to lobby their councillors to work on their behalf.
