In a perusal of electoral results countrywide, as published in the Irish Examiner of May 26, 2014, it was startling that in practically every constituency less than half of the electorate cast their franchise.

If such figures were carried forward to the forthcoming referendum or the next general election, a majority of the electorate would have failed to elect a government representative of that majority — ipso facto a minority would pass the referendum and elect the next government.

Is it not time voting was made compulsory in the 26 counties ?
