Once again Terry Prone has said it equitably but spot on (Irish Examiner, April 13). 

Joyce Anderson (Drinks companies should fund hospital clinics, February 9) suggests the extra revenue raised by government by the introduction of a minimum price on alcohol sales be used to establish a 24/7 clinic to care only for those disabled, incapacitated or injured by drink.

You cannot really call political failure to tackle alcohol companies’ sponsorship of sports spineless as it’s a tall order and has been debated for 50 years without any action.

Thank you Gerard Howlin for distilling the Middle East problem so eloquently and astutely. (‘Verbal attacks on Israel encourage the killing of Jews in Europe’, Irish Examiner, January 14).

The headline “Al-Qaeda’s Revenge” (Saturday, January 10) caught me by surprise.

THANKS to Joyce Anderson Gleasure (Letters, April 26) for correcting me on my geographic illiteracy as to the whereabouts of America.

I MUST correct Patrick Dolan (Letters, April 9) who suggested Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez could be called Americans.

JOE Higgins MEP of the Peace and Neutrality Alliance needs a better sense of history (‘Disastrous war has done untold damage to civilians’, March 20).

LET the honest voice of John Banville (May 25) bring us to a sense of our own culpability in any child abuse case and to the recognition that no amount of money is enough to undo what has been done.

WHILE reading Joyce Anderson Gleasure’s response (July 8) to my letter of June 24, my first thought was of a point- by-point rebuttal. But after a second reading I realised it would be futile.

I WOULD ask John Fenton (‘Bush to blame for my son’s death’, Letters, June 24) where we would be without those like his son who make the supreme sacrifice for their country — a sacrifice very few are even willing to consider in these times.

IF it were not so horribly sad, I would have laughed out loud when I read the letter (June 13) from American Joyce Anderson Gleasure about President Bush and US Middle East policy.

SO Joyce Anderson Gleasure (Letters, June 13) thinks President George W Bush is defending the highest code?

PATRICK SEALE might be a writer on Middle East topics, but he knows little about American politics (May 26). If he did, he would not spend time in a vitriolic diatribe against a president who has done just about all that he can because he is working with a Congress, the majority of whom are not of his party and without whose approval he cannot spend money.

IRELAND has lost the genuine, astute and honourable leadership of a fine Taoiseach in his prime, not to the evidence and discernment of the Mahon Tribunal, not to democratic elections, but to the prejudice of the media.
