Crawford Art Gallery is celebrating St Patrick’s Day with a jam-packed weekend programme of family-friendly events.
This programme includes an interactive St Patrick’s Day-themed family trail, tours of the Great Irish Artists Collection in both Irish and English, and traditional music performance at 2.30pm on St Patrick’s Day itself.
Children and the young-at-heart are especially likely to enjoy the carnival-style Portrait Peek-a-Boo boards set up in the gallery over the weekend.
Based on two artworks from the gallery’s collection, Portrait of Dr Robert Emmet and Lilac and Laburnum – Portrait of Mabel Arnott, they allow you to place yourself in the portrait and snap a photo of yourself as a work of art.

Award-winning Northern Irish author and illustrator Patrick Donnelly has just released a new picture book.
is inspired by the real, but very rare, golden hare of Rathlin Island, just off the coast from Donnelly’s hometown of Ballycastle in County Antrim.
The book tells the story of Meara and her grandad, who set out on a journey to find the hare and discover all sorts of treasures along the way.
They realise that it’s not just rare and unusual creatures that make nature so wonderful. There are many surprising plants and animals if only we take the time to look closely.
This ode to the natural world reminds us to pay attention to the wonders surrounding us. It is ideal for young children aged from zero to four and costs €14.99.
It's widely accepted that breast is best, but there’s no denying that breastfeeding can be a struggle for some new mums.
Nicola O’Byrne is an award-winning lactation consultant, paediatric nurse, and mother of five who started helping struggling mothers in 2005. She has since helped thousands all over the country.
Her Instagram account @nicola_lactationconsultant is an excellent resource for anyone considering breastfeeding or is in the throes of night feeds. She busts myths such as the notion that breastfeeding should come naturally.
O’Byrne also shares practical tips, such as the best positions for breastfeeding, how to breastfeed twins, and how to stop breastfeeding when you’re ready.

Nicola McDonnell’s daughter Sienna has suffered from eczema from birth.
When Sienna was a baby, McDonnell did her utmost to protect her skin. She would dress her in natural fabrics, use only non-biological washing detergent, trim her fingernails, and try countless creams, antihistamines, and steroids. But Sienna often scratched and damaged her skin in her cot at night.
McDonnell created the Shruggi to stop this from happening. It’s a soft, flexible mitten worn over the shoulders and arms to allow for freedom of movement while covering a child’s hands so that they cannot scratch their skin.
It can be worn over or under regular clothing. It’s made from premium quality natural material. It’s machine washable and comes in a choice of pink or green.
The Shruggi is also suitable for children suffering from psoriasis or allergies, chicken pox, or any other condition that causes their skin to itch.
- It comes in sizes ranging from six months to three years, costs €19.99, and can be purchased from itchylittlemonkeys.com
