Prestigious dairy event announced
Jointly sponsored by Baileys, the makers of the top-selling liqueur in the world, and Glanbia Virginia, it will have an €8,000 prize fund.
The Baileys, as it is known in cattle-showing circles, has become the most sought-after title for Holstein Friesian breeders in Ireland.
Brendan Smyth, Glanbia Virginia, the co-ordinator, said the competition, which attracts thousands of spectators every year
to the ringside, recognises cows with high genetic merit, high yield, increasing protein content and good overall appearance.
Baileys Ireland home director Paul Pratt said the competition is an excellent showcase for the very best in dairy breeding that is ultimately required to provide a top quality cream supply for Baileys.
The liqueur is now the eighth largest selling global premium spirits brand in the world, selling in excess of 72 million bottles per year in over 130 countries.
Secretary Irish Holstein Freisian Association Kevin Dillon said to be placed in the Baileys is probably the most valued title that any breeder can put on a cow’s CV.
“It is probably the only competition where the top 25 cows in Ireland meet together in the one class to compete,” he said.
