Lennon faces further sectarian death threats
British police were today continuing the hunt for vandals who daubed death threats outside the home of Celtic footballer Neil Lennon.
The graffiti was discovered on Saturday outside the Glasgow home of the Celtic star, who quit the Northern Ireland international team after receiving a similar death threat two years ago.
The incident prompted calls by anti-sectarian campaign group Nil By Mouth for the perpetrators to be charged as soon as possible.
Strathclyde Police were probing the incident but Nil By Mouth insist those responsible must be dealt with in the war against sectarianism.
A Nil By Mouth spokesman said: “It is unacceptable that anyone should have to endure this type of abuse.
“The treatment suffered by Neil Lennon since he has been playing for Celtic has had a large sectarian element to it.
“Hopefully, the latest culprits will be arrested by the police and charged under the new aggravated religious hatred legislation.
“Since it was brought in June 2003, it is averaging one arrest a day.”
The graffiti outside Lennon’s home in the west end of Glasgow included the words, “You are a dead man Lennon”, according to the Glasgow-based Herald newspaper.
The Catholic midfielder quit the international stage after withdrawing from his first game as captain following a death threat in August 2002.
Lennon, who joined the Glasgow club from Leicester in 2000, was also attacked in the city’s west end in May 2003.
He has been a regular in Celtic’s title-winning side this season and was last week voted player of the year by the club’s fans.
A Strathclyde Police spokesman said inquiries were ongoing.
