Hoops splash cash as strike duo arrive

QPR were the standout big spenders as the transfer window slammed shut last night.

The Hoops confirmed the signing of Bobby Zamora just minutes before the 11pm deadline last night, following on from the signing of French veteran striker Djibril Cisse.

Cisse is in line to make his Premier League return tonight against Aston Villa after signing for QPR on an unusually quiet transfer deadline day.

The London outfit confirmed the signing of Cisse, the former Liverpool and Sunderland striker, from Lazio on a two-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Cisse said: “I have unfinished business here in England. The English league is the best in the world. It is the league that suits me the most.”

Everton enjoyed a great day yesterday. Not only did they beat City but they signed Croatian intenational striker Nikica Jelavic from Rangers, in a deal worth in the region of £6.5m.

“It is a big thing for me and it is a new step in my career, a step forward,” he said. “I am very pleased and very excited, it is a new challenge for me.

“I think I can bring some good football and to score many goals and to try to win some trophies.”

The Croatia international became manager David Moyes’ third signing of the January transfer window, following a loan for Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan and a permanent deal for last night’s hero, former Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson.

Jelavic was introduced to the Goodison Park crowd during half-time of their 1-0 victory over Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester City.

As Jelavic joined, Louis Saha left, joining Harry Rednapp’s Tottenham in a surprise move.

Redknapp was also trying to offload Russian star Roman Pavlyuchenko to Lokomotiv Moscow late last night.

Vedran Corluka was a confirmed departure from White Hart Lane, the defender joining Bayer Leverkusen on loan.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini had indicated on Monday that City would not be engaged in any transfer activity before the window shut, but that didn’t prove the case.

They signed David Pizarro from Roma on loan last night. Earlier full-back Wayne Bridge clinched a move to Sunderland on loan for the rest of the season.

Black Cats manager Martin O’Neill said: “I’m hoping that with Wayne’s undoubted experience and ability he can be a big help to the team until the end of the season.”

Chelsea were the first Premier League club of the day to have a deal confirmed, with Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne finalising his move from Genk.

The 20-year-old had signed a five-and-a-half year contract at Stamford Bridge but that he would remain in his homeland with Genk on loan until the end of the season.

The Blues also confirmed that their 18-year-old Austrian youth international Philipp Prosenik had joined AC Milan.

As for Manchester United, their teenage midfielder Ravel Morrison joined Championship leaders West Ham.

And United pulled off a coup over their noisy neighbours City, snaring former Switzerland Under-17 skipper Frederic Veseli, 19, from City.

Blackburn announced the signing of former Halmstad winger Marcus Olsson, the twin brother of Rovers’ Swedish wide man Martin Olsson and QPR defender Bradley Orr.

Manager Steve Kean also made it clear he expected wantaway defender Christopher Samba to stay at Ewood Park.

Bolton, understood to have had an offer turned down by Middlesbrough for Rhys Williams, snapped up 19-year-old Japanese midfielder Ryo Miyaichi on a loan deal from Arsenal and defender Liam Ridgewell completed a permanent transfer from Birmingham to West Brom.

Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham has joined Nottingham Forest on loan until the end of the season. He agreed terms at the City Ground and could make his Forest debut on Sunday against Derby.

Arsenal completed the signing of one for the future, 19-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder Thomas Eisfeld. He will be a valuable addition to the squad, according to Arsene Wenger.

“Thomas is a player we have liked for some time. We’ve watched him closely this season,” the Frenchman said.

“He is young but has proven to us that he can play, that he has the attitude and technical ability to be a valuable addition to our squad.”

Wenger allowed Japanese midfielder Ryo Miyaichi, 19, to go on loan to Bolton while West Brom signed defender Liam Ridgewell from Birmingham.
