Brown delivers at the death
The Martin O’Neill effect is starting to rub off on the Black Cats, as they grabbed a vital away win.
O’Neill had urged his side to take responsibility for shooting, and they responded. He had told on-loan striker Niclas Bendtner the best way to prove himself would be to “win us some football matches and behave”.
Bendtner had already hit the post with a header when he rose to meet Kieron Richardson’s near-post corner and put Sunderland ahead after 19 minutes. QPR came close to drawing level early in the second half but Helguson’s header was cleared off the Sunderland line.
But QPR were rocking and Sessegnon latched onto Gabbidon’s backwards header, rounded Kenny and stabbed his shot into the empty net.
QPR seemed down and out — but they mounted a sensational comeback with two goals in four minutes.
Helguson scrambled home the first after beating Brown to meet Faurlin’s cross. Then Faurlin then lifted a cross towards Helguson at the far post and his knock-down was met by Jamie Mackie who nodded the ball home.
It looked like QPR had rescued a point until Brown met Richardson’s corner and directed his header inside the far post.
