Garcia lifted by eagle in Mallorca Classic

A late eagle today boosted Sergio Garcia’s chances of a second Mallorca Classic title in the rain-delayed second round at Pula Golf Club.

Garcia was one of 54 players who returned to the course this morning to complete their second rounds due to the knock-on effect of Thursday afternoon’s thunderstorm.

At three under par with two holes to play the world number 10 – first, second and second in his three appearances in the event – was six adrift of clubhouse leaders Robert-Jan Derksen and Jean-Francois Lucquin.

But the 27-year-old then holed his approach to the par-four 17th, spinning a lob wedge back into the hole from 78 yards for an eagle two.

A par at the 18th completed a 67 for a five-under-par halfway total of 135 and Garcia said: “I would have been happy to finish three or four under par because of the way the day was, but that was a little bonus there and I think I’m still in a good position for this afternoon.

“It’s not going to be playing easy and I think the scores are going to come back a bit because of the windy conditions. Last year’s winning total was five under and it always seems to be between five and 10 under that wins.”
