Golf: Daly escapes fine for outburst

John Daly has escaped being fined for tossing his driver into a lake during the Players Championship.

It was thought Daly might be made the first victim of a new US Tour crackdown on behaviour, but the incident was not thought sufficiently serious.

The former Open champion missed the cut by one after his nonchalent dismissal of the club at the 14th hole.

‘‘It was loose,’’ he said. ‘‘I twisted it back to where it was. Then I twisted it again. And I said ‘Hell, there’s no reason to keep it’.’’
