Scottish plan Donald’s trump card

US billionaire Donald Trump has submitted a planning application for a golf course development in Scotland worth €1.5 billion.

“We have incredible ocean frontage, incredible dunes and unbelievable land. When we put it all together it will be the greatest golf course anywhere in the world,” he said.

The proposal is for two championship golf courses, a five-star hotel, and low-rise accommodation in Aberdeenshire.

“Everyone wants it to happen. If I don’t do it here I’ll do it somewhere else, but I’d rather do it here,” he said.

Trump was convinced of the proposal after a meeting Britain’s Duke of York, Prince Andrew, whom Trump said made a “terrific impression”.

“He gave a presentation here to make sure I spend £1 billion in your country, and that’s what I’m going to be doing,” said Trump.

Trump’s son, Donald Jnr, the Trump Organisation’s vice president for development, said if the golf course proves successful, future projects in Britain are likely.

But the project is not without its opponents — the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Scotland says dunes on the site are an important habitat for skylarks, lapwings and shelducks.
