Controversy over Ryder points for World Match Play

THOUGH Paul McGinley isn’t complaining, it is understandable that players resent the awarding of Ryder Cup and Order of Merit points to those contesting the £2.44m (€3.61m) HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth.

McGinley is one of eight Europeans in the 16-strong field. That means the exclusion of a whole host of other worthy team candidates.

Ian Poulter has been particularly vocal but got nowhere with European Tour officials clearly intent on promoting an event with such a prize fund.
