Home DIY: Five hacks to make painting skirting board easier

There is a huge range of materials available for skirting. Hardboard is an economic choice which when painted is largely indistinguishable from pricier solid wood. File picture

SLIDE

Slide a piece of heavy card behind the board’s top edge and move it along as you paint to prevent hitting the wall. There are variations on a classic edger tool.

TAPE

For carpet in place use a wide piece of painter’s tape (blue) and set it non-sticky side to the skirting as if trying to stick it along the base of the board. Push the length of the tape down into the gap as best as you can, and when you feel the subfloor, fold it back towards you over the edge of the carpet to stick in place.

SEALANT

Caulk the top of the board with a flexible sealant for a seamless finish. Ensure you use a generous bead and smooth out with a finger (the excess will go behind the board).

PRIME

Going trendy and dark? Avoid that second coat on bare wood with a primer by choosing a high-hiding product like Farrow & Ball Dark Tones Primer and Undercoat; €32 for 750ml, B&Q.
