Letter to the Editor: RTÉ and GAA leave fans out of picture
Last Sunday I decided to watch the Roscommon v Cork Super 8 game on the RTÉ player. However, as I have a limited broadband package and my desire to follow my native county had gobbled up nearly 1Gb of my data allowance after 20 minutes, I abandoned the task.
Roscommon may be known for many things but certainly not for the quality of its broadband. I wondered how many of my fellow Rossies were unable to watch the match because of their poor broadband.
RTÉ did the ridiculous thing, not for the first time this summer I might add, of showing the Dublin v Tyrone game on RTÉ 2 and also on the News Channel, with commentary as Gaeilge on the latter. Why have they abandoned the practice of having the Irish commentary broadcast simultaneously with the English commentary allowing the viewer to change languages as they have done before?
That way they could have shown the Roscommon v Cork game on the News Channel and everyone would have been happy!
The previous day thousands of supporters in Mayo and Donegal were denied the opportunity of watching their heroes play, undoubtedly the match of the weekend, as that game was shown exclusively on Sky Sports.
It seems rural people in the West of Ireland do not matter to those great stalwarts of Irish society, the GAA and RTÉ.
