Loss of Aer Lingus flights is good news
Reading the reports last week you would think Cork Airport was going to close down.
The loss of Aer Lingus flights to Dublin is very good news for all airlines offering direct flights out of Cork.
Aer Lingus say it is unprofitable. When was it profitable? Business people say they could not get on the flights. That’s true, but most people on the flights were travelling free for onward flights out of Dublin.
The load factor on these flights has dropped very much in the last few months due to CSA’s Prague service and Jetmagic’s direct flights to Rome Milan, Barcelona, Belfast, Nantes and Brussels and Aer Aran’s flights to Britain.
All of these passengers had to travel to Dublin and Heathrow before, but not anymore.
Cork was never high on Aer Lingus’s plans - if it was they would have based crews in Cork to offer a better service.
It’s hard to believe that Aer Lingus only need two planes to operate its Cork services.
It’s also good news for another airline who will now be able to park on stand four or six planes nearer to the arrivals hall in wet weather.
