A matter of pride

I REFER to William Ever’s letter (Irish Examiner, Sept 19), in which he says that Irish is a dead language.

Wrong! It is not dead because it is still spoken.

Learned people such as the Pope have pointed out the importance of preserving minority languages. Every language with the music, poetry and folktales that go with it contributes to the richness of global culture.

A world with only one language would be a poorer world culturally.

Latin is still widely studied in schools and colleges, and is a sound basis for mastering other languages.

A nation that has a pride for things of its own, such as its native tongue, is much more likely to solve its problems than a people without God or language.

Yes, there are many who could read and understand Mr Ó Cuanacháin’s letter (Irish Examiner, Sept 15) if it were written in Irish.

Irish is not a difficult language to learn, unless you are biased against it.
