Alison Chawke released from prison, four weeks into 12-month sentence

The daughter of Limerick publican Charlie Chawke has been released early from prison, just four weeks into a 12-month sentence.

The 41 year-old was released from Limerick Female Prison on Tuesday, a source confirmed to the Irish Examiner.

Alison Chawke with an address at The Beeches, Holywell, Goatstown, Dublin 14, was jailed alongside her brother Bill, for assault causing harm to two men at the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare, in November 2023.

On July 14, Bill Chawke was sentenced to two years and six months with the final 12 months suspended. 

Alison Chawke was sentenced to two years and two months with the final 14 months suspended.

This was on the condition that she keeps a good behaviour and pay €1,000.

It is understood she was released on Tuesday under the Community Return Scheme. 

The Irish Probation Service’s scheme is an incentivised scheme for the supervised release of qualifying prisoners, who complete unpaid community work as a condition of their early release.

The scheme gives the prisoners the opportunity to be released from jail early, if suitable.

The siblings were intoxicated when they lashed out.

They set upon the two victims, Gerard Cox and John Mchugh, both in their 50s, punching and kicking them and at one point, they gouged the victims’ eyes.

Bill Chawke initiated the attack, lunging at Mr Cox, while Alison Chawke threw a pint glass at the men.

She bit John McHugh on his face and kicked him in the head as her brother wrestled with him on the floor of the foyer of the hotel.

Judge Fiona O’Sullivan said the attack was “unprovoked” and “had an element of ferocity”.

The Irish Prison Service has been contacted for comment.
